Pub #48 is Gibneys Malahide (Visited April 2022)

Pub 48 and the second of our four stop-offs in Malahide is Gibney’s pub.

This is a cracker of a spot. It’s a proper traditional Irish pub with a great atmosphere. Plenty of interesting bits on the walls (see pics) and there are loads of screens throughout the pub so you won’t miss any of the sport that’s on.

Some background on the pub (Credit to Gibneys website – Link below)
The Gibney family acquired the pub in 1937. When they first arrived here on the 6th of December 1937, they were entering what was essentially a ‘spit and sawdust pub’ with a back yard that contained an apple garden and a pungent-smelling piggery.

For the Gibney family, who have been five generations in the Dublin licensed trade, this may have appeared an unusual acquisition, but it continued the family migration trend northwards towards the coast.

At the time James Joseph Gibney paid £2,500 for this pub he also owned the Royal Hotel in Howth and the Phoenix Bar in Parkgate Street, the once-famous refuge of Michael Collins. It was here that young Jack Gibney learned the business of the licensed trade before moving to Malahide.

Back into the time machine and on to present day – The pub has plenty of nice little seating areas sprinkled throughout. The low ceilings add to the cosy setting. If you head out the back there is a decent size beer garden for having a Bev and a smoke. They have screens out there for the football, rugby or whatever might be on as well.

Throughout the week they have live music, djs and quizzes sprinkled amongst the sport. If you fancy grabbing a few post pub cans or bottles they have an off-license next door. Nice and handy 🙂

Pints wise, the Guinness was tasty in here and they were selling Corona on tap which went down well.

Overall this is a belter of a spot and well worth checking out if you are in the area.
